Frontiers of Science Institute
Frontiers of Science Institute is a program designed for high school students to learn more about the STEM subjects as well as conduct their own research and learn about college life and studies. Every year, many students from all over Colorado apply to get in, but only about thirty students ever make it in. For those students, it is the opportunity of a life time to conduct research projects many of them design themselves.
Each student is assigned to a mentor who is a professor or grad student here and UNC. These mentors will then either have their assigned students help with research projects that the mentor has already started working on, or gives them the chance to design a project that the student believes is important. The projects range from disciplines like robotics and mathematics to biology and animal behavior. Each student has the chance to study what appeals to them.
There is also a chance to gain a scholarship to this program as well. For those who are underprivileged, they still have the chance to have all of their expenses paid off by the program. These students must prove that they are willing to work hard and that they would want to participate in this program more than relaxing on their summer break. These students must only pay the registration fee, but everything else including food, board, and travel expenses are paid for them.
FSI is a great opportunity for high school students to broaden their experience with research and meeting new people. The students takes trip to South Dakota, Cargill, Swift Ponds, and many more facilities to help with their research. Without FSI, there would not be this opportunity to gain college credit and truly learn more about what it means to be a scientist.
